US Dragoon Swords |
Top 1833 Dragoon Medical Officer's saber. The guard is gilt with a sharkskin grip and twisted brass wire. The engraved blade has the normal Ames engraving with the stand of arms, the "Ames" eagle and oak leaves. The reverse is similarly engraved with the exception that the center panel of the blade contains a large caduceus below the eagle. This sword is slightly shorter than the usual Dragoon officer is. The scabbard is silver plated brass and is engraved with the American eagle and leaf designs. Middle 1833 Dragoon Officer with sharkskin grip twisted brass wire and gilt guard. The blade is marked N. P. Ames/Springfield and has the typical "Ames" engraving as with the sword above except with the caduceus being replaced by "United States Dragoons". The scabbard is of browned iron. Bottom This sword is somewhat of an enigma. It is very possibly one of the four 1833 Dragoon Officer's swords ordered by the state of Pennsylvania in 1839. The guard is gilt. The grip is leather and wrapped with Model 1840 twisted brass wire. The blade is polished bright and is unmarked. There is a "P" stamped on the quillon. The scabbard is finished bright appearing never to have been browned. The scabbard is leather lined. It has several blemished in its construction which would lead you to question whether it would pass inspection for United States service. It is, however, inspected by M. P. Lomax as the four Pennsylvania sabers were. |
