M 1839 Topographical Engineers - ID Capt J. Periam. Identical saber pictured on pg. 100-101 of John Thillmann's Civil War Army Swords. Outstanding rare saber presented to an officer who gave the ultimate sacrifice at Gettysburg. The saber is is modeled after the 1833 Dragoon saber with major change being the guard is three branches instead of two. Brass guard still has genrous traces of gilt. The ferrule is chased with vines and the quiullion has a cast star on both sides. The sharkskin grip and wire are in outstanding condition. The blade still retains it's original frost and polish. Obverse side is etched with a sun burst / NP Ames Cutler Springfield / foliate / stand of arms with a US in a shield / Eagle with liberty in a ribbon with flames above / stand of arms / field tent. Reverse is etched with a sun burst / stand of arms - TE in a shield / Eagle with EPU ribbon above with rays / rays - United States Corps of Topographical Engineers - rays / Tecumseh / foliate. Scabbard is patina brown with the TE shield at the throat, split rings and flaring drag. Between the middle ring band is the presentation alomg with battle honors prior to Gettysburg. presntation reads: Capt. J. Perium / Presented by / Lieut. Howard E. Stansberry. Battle honors on right side of spesentation is Bull Run, Edwards Ferry, Yorktown, West Point, Fair Oaks, Orchard Station, Savage Station, White Oak Swamp & Nelson Farm. Left side is Malvern Hill 1st, Malvern Hill 2nd, Flint Hill, South Mountan, Sharpsburg, Antietam, Charlestown, Ashby'd Gap & Fredricksburg. Awesome saber with outstanding history.
