A superb example of a rare medical officer sword only in service from 1834 through 1839. There were not many Medical officers during this period so these swords are quite scarce. The reverse has a potted flower, a ribbon with N. P. Ames / Cutler Springfield, a wreath with U.S. in the center, Bust of Hippocrates (Father of Medicine), a full figure of Lady Liberty and an American Eagle with a ribbon engraved Free Free, and the engraving ends with a theater curtain and rays. The regulation hilt is completely covered with heavy gilt as are the mounts. The scabbard body is back seamed leather.
