General Grant's Presentation Sword
A Presentation Sword by President Ulysses S. Grant to Colonel Horace Wilson in June, 1874
This gold sword has 25+ karats of real diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, amethyst and garnets plus seed pearls. This is more embellished and elaborate than any sword we've seen. The jewel work was very possibly was done by Tiffany or Schuyler, Hartley & Graham.
The sword was also made before the end of the civil war. It was made by Ames for W. H. Smith of Brooklyn. (out of business around wars end.) Most presentation swords of this type were pre-civil war era. It had a presentation which was buffed off and replaced with this one.
This presentation is original and of the 1870 period. Exact inscription is as follows:   "Presented by General Grant, President of the United States of America on the occasion of his visit TO ENGLAND TO COLONEL HORACE WILSON.  June 1874"
It seems that a sword of this quality must have been presented to Grant or someone of Grants importance. The description fits the sword presented to Grant at the Metropolitan Fair except that records show that it was by Tiffany. Could Tiffany & Co. have been the after market jewelers that embellished this sword and presented it to Grant?
