Major Morfit of the Maryland Line C.S.A. joined the Confederate forces at the outbreak of hostilities. He was a lawyer but enlisted as a private. After a year in the field he was made Quarter Master at Richmond with the rank of Captain. He was soon promoted to Major.

Toward the end of the war he was placed in command of prisons at Salsbury NC. Here he remained until the end of the war. He was unable to resume his law practice because he refused to sign the "Ironclad" Oath pledging never to take up arms against the north. He sacrificed his career to defend the cause that he loved.

The book is inscribed in ink Maj. Mason Morfit 2__ / Richmond Va / March 9th 1863.
