Photos, Uniform Frock coat made by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, Civil War Surgical Kit, Signed CDV's of the Officers of the 3rd West Virginia Infantry & the 6th West Virginia Cavalry, and Bearskin Gloves Dr. Abel Houston Thayer of Grafton, West Virginia Dr. Thayer practiced medicine in the year of 1861 at Webster, West Virginia. He was commissioned Assistant Surgeon of the 3rd West Virginia Infantry, U.S. Volunteers during 1862 – 1864. He was promoted to Surgeon of the 6th West Virginia Cavalry on Oct 4th, 1864. Dr. Thayer saw active service in the Army of the Potomac and with Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley until the close of the war in 1865. It is believed that Dr. Thayer was present at the autopsy of John Wilkes Booth. The family has trial testimony attempting to quiet the rumors that Booth was still alive. After the war, the Regiment and Dr. Thayer were engaged in the North for one year against hostile Indians. The regiment was mustered out in May 1866. Dr. Thayer returned to Grafton West Virginia and resumed his medical practice.
