Item # DR313   -  Will of the famous Sir Hugh Palliser, Admiral
Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majestys Fleet Price: US $1,250       Qty Required
This is the original will of Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, Bt 1723-1796/ Admiral of the Blue Squadron of His Majesty*s Fleet. The will is 11 pages and is in excellent condition. It was extracted from the Principal Registry of Her Majesty*s Court of Probate in the irerogative Court of Canterbury. The will is accompanied by a print out of his history, photo, etc. Admiral Palliser was born at Kirk Deighton, in the county of York, on the 26th of February, 1722 and gradually rose to eminent stations in both the military and civil branches of the naval service. In 1747 he was wounded by a ball, which entered on the left side of his back, and was taken out of his right groin, another struck his right hip, and a third his left shoulder. He recovered contrary to the expectations of the surgeons themselves, but remained ever after lame in the left leg. From 1764 to 1766, when he was a captain, Palliser was Governer of Newfoundland, where Cook, who had served under him earlier, was emplyed charting the coast. He was subsequently Comptroller of the Navy and then, second-in-command to Augustus Keppel at the Battle of Ushant in 1778. His conduct there and a subsequent court martial over the issue of whether he had failed to obey his chief*s signals for support, divided the Navy at a time of great national peril, and resulted in the refusal of some of the best flag officers to serve, ill-founded, and Palliser was burnt in effigy by a mob and his London house was gutted. Thanks to his patron, the Earl of Sandwich, First Lord of the Admiralty until the fall of Lord North*s ministry in 1782, Palliser was appointed Governor of Greenwich Hospital in that year. Admiral Sir Hugh Palliser, Lord of the Manor, in the late 18th Century built the Captain Cook memorial in the grounds of the Vache, to commemorate the life of his friend Captain Cook. There is a ton of further information available on the Internet about this Famous Admiral of His Majesty*s Fleet and the Blue Squadron that he commanded.

Origin: Ireland      Maker: Sir Hugh Palliser      Year: 1791      Model: Will      Size: 8X12.75in.      Condition: VG-Exc
