M 1850 Foot Officer Sword - Rare collapsable scabbard.   This is a rare item and I am glad I actually have had the pleasure of handling this.  John Thillman discusses the collapsable French steel scabbard in both of his impressive books. I have seen one scabbard by itself and two advertised with Solingen swords. This is the first one I have seen that had a French Klingenthal sword to go with the French scabbard.  Sword is in the standard foot officer configuartion with brass guard cast with foliate.  It has staining and heavy patina.  The sharskin wrap and wire have use but no real issues.  The blade has staining but is still bright.  Obverse blade is stamped with proof marks, fan foliate / foliate / stand of arms-flags / foliate.  The reverse side is etched in the same pattern except the stand of arms is slighty different.  The scabbard is collapsable meaning when you pull the sword out it retracts and when you place it back in it goes back to full length.  It is fully functional and locks into place when retracted.  The steel is stained and has taken on a gray patina. The scabbard is marked on the reverse with the manufacturers name and address.  It is stamped Jay & Cie, Brevetes & Paris and and #2.  This is a carried sword. I know collectors of the CW always look for a US on a blade to confirm a French sword was imported to the US for the war. This does not have that but it is possible it came into the county early war when both sides had agents in France and were scrambling for arms.  If it did not see service here then it saw heavy service somewhere else.  A really interesting and rare sword that you never see.
