M 1840 NCO.  Hand chased guard, scabbard throat, drag and etched blade.  Presented to Sgt. E. McElroy of the 9th MVM in 1866.  Custom NCO with hand chased hilt and scabbard furniture.  Blade is etched but do to poor storage it is pitted, worn and a little hard to make out.  The Emerson and Silver Keystone mark in on the ricasso.  Scabbard is leather and is very sound.  Emerson and SIlver did not make leather NCo scabbards during the war but based on the chasing on the guard and scabbard parts this sword came this way and was not married toghether.  I imagne that this was made during the war period and repurposed post war for the presentation which reads:  Presented to /  Sgt. E. McElroy / Co G. 9th Reg. MVM / Charlestown June 18th 1866.    I found 2 E. McElroys with the 9th MVM during the Civil War.  One was a private and one was a sgt.  Probably related somwhow.  I imagine this was for the sgt who served during the CW but more research will have to be done by the new owner.
