M1840 Cavalry Officer Saber - ID to Capt John Porter 14th NY Cavalry.  Early war saber that was an enlisted configuration but mounted with an officer etched blade and washer.  Standard 1840 brass hilt with deep patina.  Grip is worn with traces of wire wrap and dried sharskin loss.  Blade is stained and gray.  Reverse ricasso has Clauberg address with standing knight.  Reverse panel etch has Capt. J. P. Porter / Comp G. 1st METPLN : Light : Cavalry.  Obvioulsy this is for Metropolitan Cavalry which appers to be the unit name prior to mustering as Federal troops.   Steel scabbard has a mix of patina and staining and has numerous dings/dents from field use.  This is a carried saber.  Capt Porter comes up in an internet search as he escaped from Libby Prison.  He was captued 6/63 while on the attack of Port Hudson and escaped in 1/64.  Capt Porter has great history and was wounded at Second Bull Run.   If you are looking for a carried saber identified to a cavalry officer with history then this is the one for you.
