M 1840 Engineer Sword.  This wondeful sword is one of the rarest regulation swords ever made. Sometimes called the "Rattlesnake Guard".  This sword is uniquely American which was rare at the time when most swords were copies of French or British models.  The sword has a cast rattlesnake grip, turned down guard with a castle which was the Engineer Corps insignia.  The reverse counter guard is hinged and works perfectly.  The triangular blade is bright and frosty with great etch.  Obverse lower balde etch is foliate / stand of arms / foliate / stand of arms / foliate.  Obverse upper edge is foliate / caduces / foliate / stand of arms - rays / foliate.  Reverse (flat side) etch NP Ames Cutler Springfield - foliate / U.S. Corps of Engineers (surrounded by rays) / eagle with EPU ribbon - rays / foliate.  Scabbard is brass covered with black leather.  Top throat has a Union shield for frog stud.  Drag is long, slim and undecorated.  All brass parts retain a generaous amount of original gilt.
