Ames encountered manufacturing problems with the complicated nature of this pattern. They finally had to look to European makers to resolve their issues. This could account for the lack of the Ames name on this sword. There are so few of these swords with engraved mounts it is thought they might have been special gifts from Ames to gain support due to their problems with the contract.
