Very historic New York sword-27th NYSA, 8th NG Henry Shumway

Size: 30 inch blade,1.2 in. wide  Condition: Excellent+ 

A High Grade, Cased Presentation by Ames in 1836 to Henry Shumway. The heavy brass scabbard is covered in heavy gold. The presentation reads: The Eighth National Guard / to / Lt. Commnt. Henry S. Shumway / 12th September 1836. The scabbard has heavy leaf appliqué decorating the fruit area with a frog stud, The lower mount area and the drag. The reverse side of the scabbard is stamped near the throat: N. P. Ames / Cutler /Springfield /Mass. The beautiful sword has an eight sided pommel wrapped with a leaf decoration. It has a very fancy capstan nut. The grip is silver, also eight sided and formed in two pieces meeting halfway up. The heavy cross guard is also guilt with silver letters on each side. One side has - 27 / NYSA (27th New York State Artillery) the other has - 8 / NG (8th National Guard). The blade is a wide, heavy and double edged. It has a single center fuller running almost to the tip. It is marked N.P.Ames /Cutler / Springfield and etched with an urn, floral, a great bust of Washington with his horse. There is an American Eagle holding a banner which reads: liberty and perched on a very detailed NY National Guard shield with NG and the motto PRO PATRIA ET GLORIA. There is also a bust of  a Dragoon soldier with plumed helmet and folate. The reverse side has Arms, foliate and PRO PATRIA ET GLORIA. A magnificent and very early Ames presentation sword in it's fitted walnut case.
