M 1840 Artillery Officer Saber. Rare saber from the premier manufacturer of Ameican swords during the 19th century. Brass guard has fine casting with a nice mellow patina. Leather grip and twisted wire are in good condition. Grip taper is typical of early type 1 models. Type 1 models are identified as having a raw throat edge and the scabbard edge sits inside the underside of the guard. Blade is lightly etched and turning gray. Obverse blade etch N.P Ames Cutler Springfield Mass / stand of arms - flags / foliate - eagle with epu ribbon - rays / foliate. Reverse etch is foliate / stand of arms / US / Tecumseh / foliate. Steel scabbard is a period replacement as it is an enlisted scabbard with heavier carry ring bands, drag and the upper ring band is inspected with an R. Scabbard has turned a gray patina as well. Overall a very rare sword that is rarely seen for sale on the open market.
