M 1840 Cavalry Officer Saber - converted Ames heavy cav.

Manufactured: Cabotville Mass  Maker: Ames Mfg Co  Year: 1849  Model: M 1840 Cavalry Saber
Size: 35.50  Condition: VG

M 1840 Cavalry Officer Saber - converted Ames heavy cav.  Saber is straight out of the attic and is an intersting example.  It is an enlisted Ames heavy cavalry saber, dated and inspected, that has been etched and converted to an officer saber.  Brass guard is plain like an enlisted version but the pommel cap is not Ames inspected.  Grip is sharkskin with double row of twisted wire in a chevron format.
Blade is bright and has period sharpening.  Obverse of blade is stamped US / WD / fan foliate / stand of arms / USC / sand of arms - foliate / wreath.  Reverse side is stamped Ames Mfg Co Cabotville  1849 / fan foliate / union shield - eagle with epu ribbon / foliate - stand of arms - foliate / star.  The etch pattern is light and resembles some of the style of Roby.  Scabbrd fits the blade like a glove and I believe is it the original Ames scabbard body with brass mounts and at one time a brass drag.  Mounts have almost black patina and also resemble mounts used on Roby cavalry officer sabers.  The shoe drag is long gone and the screw holes can be seen on both sides of the scabbard body.  Both guard and scabbard have a depp attic patina.
