M 1843 Revenue Cutter Service Sword - Rare. Very rare sword not normally seen. Brass guard has high grade casting with two folding guards and leaf quillions. Obverse side counter guard is a spread winged eagle perched on a union shield. Reverse counter guard is plain. Pommel is globular and has a union shield on the obverse side and a ribbon with liberty on the reverse side. Grip is silver with engraved spiral striations. Blade etch is very fine. Obverse blade is etched N.P. Ames Cutler Springfield / fan foliate / foliate - stand of arms / standing techumseh / Eagle with liberty in dry needle in ribbon with rays / foliate / stand of arms-foliate. Reverse blade has fan foliate / urn - foliate / stand of arms - liberty cap / Eagle with liberty in dry needle in a ribbon with rays / foliate.
Black leather scabbard is sound with minor crazing to the surface. Top mount has a frog stud and is etched with an Eagle and union shield. Middle mount is etched with an anchor above the scales of justice on a union shield. Drag is etched with foliate. Great rare sword in wonderful condition.
