Presented Militia Sword/Grouping-ID Maj. Gen. Seth Williams. Great Presented Ames Militia Officer Sword c. 1847 when Gen Williams was a Lt. as Aide de Camp to Gen Robert Patterson during the Mexican American War. Sword is in mint condition. Brass guard is very large & heavy with high grade casting and mother of pearl plaques for grips. Obverse side has a semi precious stone in the guard and the grip. Blade is mint with full frost and polish. It has a central fuller and is double edged which was common during the period. Blade is marked NP Ames Cutler Springfield. Blade has foliate and stand of arms on both sides of the blade. Obverse side has an Eagle with EPU ribbon above. Reverse side has a liberty cap surrounded by rays. Brass scabbard has high grade cast mounts and applique on the drag. Scabbard body is hand chased with foliate and militarty motifs along it's entire surface. Between the mounts is engraved into the scabbard:
Lieut Seth Williams / U.S.A. from his Fellow / Townsmen / A Tribute Of Respect & Esteem; / to the Soldier & the Man / Remainder of group from this period is a medal for the occupation of Mexico City, and a Eurpean flint lock pistol which appears to be a war trophy from Mexico. Civil War era items are his Colt Army pistol in original holster, mess kit with gold plated knife, fork, spoon & cup, and original framed photgraph. Post war item is a biography written in 1887 by Gen Williams brother in law. Great military grouping spanning some of the most formative years in our country's history. Gen Williams passed away in 1866 at the age of 44.
