M 1840 Cavalry Saber - Ames - Massachusetts Marked. It has a brass shield at the throat with the rack # 59. Scabbard drag is marked with the # 15 on the obverse and MS (Mass. state Marking) on the reverse drag. Hilt is marked MS (Mass. state Marking) on the reverse knuckle bow. Blade obverse ricasso is marked US and ADK. Reverse ricasso has the Ames Cabotville address and is dated 1851. The pommel is also marked ADK and JWR. Leather grip with standard wire wrap. A fine State of Massachusetts saber no doubt carried by the 1st Mass. Cavalry when they responded to the call for troops at the start of the war.
