Size: 28.25 blade  Condition:  

U.S.N. Officer, Pattern 1841.with Blade etch ID to Simon B. Bissell USN. The sword has the eagle pommel with feathers covering the pommel pien and running down the back strap to the ferrule. Grip is carved, checkered design. It has a folding guard with Acorn & Oak leaf raised design. The reverse has a plain folding counter guard. The blade is a narrow (.90 width at the ricasso area) quill back design. The top part of the etching is worn and very light. It begins with  N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield, floral, a seaman lookout, a stand of arms, American eagle and foliate. The reverse etching has floral, a fouled anchor with rays, a wreath with S. B. Bissell / U.S.N.  A full sailing ship,, American Eagle with stars and rays and finishes with foliate. The leather scabbard is back seamed with brass mounts. The top mount has a frog stud and carry ring with an anchor. The middle mount has a carry ring and an engraved fouled anchor The drag is plain and of the period but likely a replacement.
