Very rare Ames Artillery Saber for South Carolina - Preview

A very scarce sword by Ames for the state of South Carolina. Reverse P style artillery.

Manufactured: Mass.  Maker: N.P.Ames  Year: Pre-War  Model: SC reverse P artillery
Size: 27.75 inch blade, 1.188 wide, .312 thick

Unmarked but definitely manufactured by Ames. Unstopped filler beginning 1/2 inch from the guard and running 20.5 inches. The entire curved blade is unmarked. The grip, ferrule and smooth pommel are the same as used for the South Carolina M1833 dragoon saber and those used on some of the swords of the National Lancers. The grip is wrapped with twisted brass wire (not dragoon twist). The thick brass guard is a reverse "P". The quillon is flat sided with no line decoration. The knuckle bow graduates wider in width and slims in thickness as it rises to the pommel.
