This is a High Grade, Small scale, Model 1841 Navy officer Eagle Pommel sword. It also has a high grade scabbard with applied, raised decoration. This sword was an early version of this Pattern. The Ames Springfield address was used until 1847. The eagle pommel, knuckle bow decoration, acorn quillons, folding guards and the engraved ferrule are all highly embellished and have heavy gilt. deeply chased, The pien is covered with an applied star. The grip is carved ivory. The blade is the early quill back variety and is etched for 19.5 inches. The etching includes the N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield, Oak leaves, a stand of arms with cannon, trident and a standing sailor on the mast with a raided hat. It also has a Federal Eagle with E.PU ribbon, a fouled anchor with trident, a sailing ship and a panel reading: United States Navy. The back seamed leather scabbard has gilt brass mounts with applied decoration to the edges along with an applied anchor on the middle mount and acorn & oak leaves on the drag. The top mount has a frog stud with a raise cast in anchor and the maker plaque on the reverse: N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield / Mass on an applied scroll.
