This high grade Model 1840 officer sword was made with a wonderful engraved silver grip with a very detailed stand of arms and flags on the obverse and foliate on the sides and the reverse. The guard has an applied solid silver plaque reading: The Chatham Artillery presents / to James W. Preston / this sword for his skill in gunnery / 8th Jany 1848. The folding counter guard is undecorated. The quillon has a decorated tip.The etched blade reads Ames Mfg. Co. / Cabotville / Mass. and is followed with foliate, a plaque reading: Savannah 1st January 1848. , Military trophies, an American eagle with E. PU ribbon and more foliate. The spine is etched with scroll work. The reverse very detailed cross hatching, foliate scrolls, Chatham Artillery / founded 1st May 1786 and a larger U.S. Above that is an Indian leaning on the Georgia state seal. followed by scroll work, The special leather scabbard has a top, middle mount and drag all hand engraved edges of the mounts.
