Ames Cavalry officer with the steel scabbard engraved: Presented by the 1st Company / N. Y. Cadet Lancers to / Capt. Barnard Hannigan / as a testimony of their high estimation of his services / Feb, 16th, 1846. Brass two branch guard with knucklebow. Decorated branches, inside and out. Pommel with Laural leaves, quillon with fan design. The top of the knuckle bow has a swirl and foliate. The wood grip core is leather covered and wrapped with twisted brass wire. The blade ricasso's are both blank with the etching starting just above: N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield, crossed American flags, scroll work, spread winged Eagle in a sun burst with script E, Pluribus Unum. The reverse has crossed American Flags, A very large U.S., a mounted Cavalry officer, and an Indian with tomahawk.The steel scabbard has a flat throat and iron mounts. It is inscribed between the mounts on the reverse side.
