High Grade Mexican War Presentation, Gold & Silver - Morris - Preview

Solid Gold presentation plaque to Capt. Lewis N. Morris for Bravery & Gallantry at Palo Alto and Resaca De La Palma

Size: 31 inch double edged blade  Condition: Excellent+ 

A fantastic sword constructed of gold, silver and mother of pearl along with a wonderful etched steel blade. The pommel is a knights helmet with a detailed eagle in top, The grip is alternating mother of pearl and solid gold insets. The gold is hand engraved with a federal shield on the obverse and a 5 pointed star on the reverse along with the scroll work of a master engraver. The guard  consists of foliate scroll designs and framed langets. The chain knuckle bow is a square link gold chain. The blade is double edged with a center fuller. It is etched with foliate, the helmet of Pallas Athena, a WAR eagle holding only arrows and ends in a flame design. The reverse is etched N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield and has foliate, swirls and a bow and a quiver of arrows. The silver scabbard is nothing short of amazing workmanship of intricate designs / A great eagle, engraved on gold is inset into the silver, inside the circle of the top ring mount / a solid gold plaque that reads: Presented to Capt. Lewis N. Morris / of the United States Army by his fellow / citizens of Albany as a token of respect / for his Bravery & Gallantry while in com- / mand of the 3rd regiment U.S. Infantry in the battles of Palo Alto and / Resaca De La Palma on the 8th & / 9th May 1846 on the banks of the Rio Grande.  
Note: Morris was Killed in action at the battle of Monterey in 1847.

The middle mount has flags, drums, cannon and a federal shield on gold inset. Below the center mount is very deep engraving into the silver body of Arms, flags,  drums, arrows and a knapsack with bedroll and U.S.A. The drag has a shell design and a gold star.
