Early - 1847 dated Ames N.C.O. sword & Scabbard - Preview

A great early NCO sword with the Ames Chicopee address and original scabbard.

This Model 1840 is dated 1847. It was made by and stamped on the blade N.P. Ames / Cabotville / 1847. The reverse is stamped U.S. / RC )Rufus Chandler, inspector 1831 - 1850) The knucklebow is stamped  J.P.C. (James Chapin inspector 1847-48) on the obverse and J.W.R. )James W. Ripley (inspector 1843-1854) on the reverse. This early style scabbard is often mistaken for an officer's model because of the flat sided throat and scalloped drag. The mounts are held in place with tiny pins, one replaced on the throat with a period brass screw. The throat shows that it was in a leather frog for many years. The leather scabbard is back seamed.
