A model 1832 Dragoon saber with the earliest date - 1834. These early swords have a very small makers mark inscribed with the dry needle method. It reads, in script:  N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield / 1834. The reverse side has the wreath with United States Dragoons. The quillon is stamped MS for Massachusetts. This has the heavy brass scabbard with the # 46 near the throat and no other markings. The grip leather over a wood core with dragoon wire.
