This is one of the original 18 Officer swords ordered by the Republic of Texas in 1840. This sword is Extremely rare. They are inspected by W.S. on the quillon. (William Smith). The grip is sharkskin with dragoon wire wrap. The guard is brass with no signs of gilt. The top of the pommel has a brass cap covering the tang as found on some Dragoon Officer Swords. The blade etching is spectacular featuring  TEXAS spelled out between the points of a Star with Sun Rays and clouds above and clouds and lightening bolts below. This Texas Star is on both sides. There is also stands of arms and foliate decoration. The N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield address is etched on the obverse.
