Ames Artillery Officer Saber -Silver/ Brass Mounts - Preview

Traces of Silver plating as Southern Militias did

Manufactured: Mass  Maker: Ames Mfg. Co.  Year: 1840  Model: Art. Off
Size:Condition: VG

The rare Ames type 1, Light Artillery Officer Sword with very scarce brass mounted scabbard. Early style Ames Blade etch but made without the Ames name. This appears to have been done on many swords sent to the South at the outbreak of the Civil War by Ames and other contractors as well. The traces of silver plate (mostly on the drag) also indicates Southern use. Many southern militia officer's swords were plated with silver. The sword has not been cleaned, taken apart or refurbished and is totally as found condition. The Leather grip is 80% with the rest aged dark wood looking like 100% leather. All the twisted brasswire remains. Blade is bright, a few slight nicks show use and etched with no Ames name or address.Very likely a Confederate used Artillery Officer's sword.
