A Very rare Ames Dragoon Officer Saber made for retailer H. E. Baldwin in New Orleans, LA. Manufactured between 1834 and 1847 this sword was: Presented by the Lafayette Riflemen / to their late commander / Col. J. R. Burns /City of Lafayette, La. / 1st August 1850. and is so inscribed between the scabbard mounts on the reverse side. Colonel Burns was a member of the Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. The top of the pommel is engraved: Always for Justice Never for oppression. The sword guard is a fancy 1833 dragoon style with decorated branches and made with an extra branch like the Topographical Engineer. It has an engraved sheet metal grip with military trophies and Latin motto: Semper prompti et gene parati (Always Ready - Born prepared). The blade is a Model 1833 officer's quill back dragoon style and etched in the Dragoon manor. N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield, a floral urn, Tecumseh, stand of arms and floral. The reverse is the floral urn, stand of arms with American Flags, American Eagle with Liberty in the ribbon and stars above followed by floral. The brass scabbard is extremely heavy. It is engraved with an eagle at the throat, a full stand of arms between the mounts and scroll work below. The throat is cut for the pipe back or dragoon blade style and engraved near the throat is: H. E. Baldwin / & Co. / By / N. P. Ames / Cabotville / Mass. The top mount has an acorn motif, the lower mount is engraved with American flags and Federal shield, The engraved shoe drag also has scroll and the Federal shield.
