Historic Model 1840 Artillery officer sword of Maj. Robert C. Buchanan with brass scabbard

Size: 32 inch blade  Condition: VG 

Highly sought after type 1 artillery officer's saber with engraved brass scabbard. The hilt is decorated on the knucklebow and quillon.The grip is leather with dragoon style wire. The pommel is decorated on the back and has a smooth dome with a flat lip around the edge. The sheet brass scabbard is heavily engraved with ring mounts that "swell" in the center. There is a heavy gilt. Engraved at the throat is Maj. Robt. C. Buchanan / U. S. Army. The blade is deeply etched N.P Ames / Cutler / Springfield with a stand of Arms with cannon, U.S. Flags and Liberty Cap. Foliate, American Eagle with E. Pluribus Unum and more foliate scrolls finish the obverse. The reverse has foliate decoration, military motif, a large U.S., Indian warrior and scroll work.      . For his service in Mexico, Buchanan was twice brevetted in recognition of his gallantry in action. After the war, Buchanan was assigned to various posts and recruiting duty. Under his command was Capt. U. S. Grant. When Grant's drinking began to affect his duties, Buchanan allegedly asked for and received Grant's resignation from the Army.  He also was recognized for gallantry several time in the civil war. For his service at Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg he was brevetted to brigadier general and major general.
