This National Lancer saber is made with a step pommel. It is marked near the ricasso N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield / 1837 and along the blade has the bottom half of a wreath containing National Lancers. Made for the famous National Lancers of Mass. The pommel is a 3 step cap unlike the other two examples in this work. The quillon and scabbard are both stamped with the number 30. All examples examined are numbered but many do not have matching numbers. It seems that some scabbards were simply put on swords without an attempt to match numbers when they were reissued at the beginning of the civil war era. At least 3 different sets of dies were used for these numbers. (based on the handful of surviving examples) Two styles are shown on this sword. The scabbards are sheet brass with brass mounts and brass carry rings. This example also has split carry rings which differs from the other example shown. All other features conform to the regulation model 1833 Dragoon.
