A very rare, high grade pattern Ames M1840 Cavalry Officer saber with amazing ownership and historical significance.

A very rare Ames model 1840 cavalry officer sword with a quill back blade. The scabbard is also an unusual high grade pattern. The sword belonged to Captain Thornton who was killed in action during the Mexican War. Captain Thornton was also the person responsible for President Polk to declair war on Mexico. Thornton and 70 troopers of the 2nd U.S. Dragoons were attacked by 300+ Mexicans. Polk called it the "The Thornton Affair"
