Manufactured: Springfield, Mass.
Maker: N. P. Ames Cutler
Year: c1840-1850
Model: Model 1840
Condition:
One of the very scarce regulation models of U.S. Swords. The Engineer corps was one of the elite and small branches of the military. The sword has a cast rattlesnake grip, a turned downward guard with the castle (this was the symbol of the Engineer branch) and stars. The reverse has a plain folding counterguard. The triangular rapier style blade has a fuller ground on each side and is etched on all three sides. These swords were supplied or purchased with a pair of scabbards. Both scabbards are of brass constriction but one with black leather covering and one with white leather. They had long throat pieces equipped with a frog stud, which is a federal shield. The drag is also long and slim.
